What this site knows about you
Written from the code, not from a template. If any of it turns out not to match what the site does, that is a bug and I want to hear about it.
A student account is a code and a class. There is no name, no email address, no password and no date of birth anywhere in it. Your typed answers are kept so that I can teach better, and email addresses and phone numbers are stripped out of them before they are stored. No IP address is ever stored.
If you are one of my students
Your account is a code such as AP12-VMDK, and the class it belongs to. That is all of it. The only place a code is connected to a name is a file on my own computer, which has never been uploaded anywhere.
While you work, the site stores, against that code:
- Which question you were on, what kind of thing you did, whether it was right, how many attempts and hints you had used, and how long since your last action.
- What you typed, up to 500 characters. Before it is stored, email addresses, phone numbers, long runs of digits and phrases like “my name is” are replaced with placeholders.
- Your comments in the class discussion, as you wrote them. Those are not stripped, because the whole point of a comment is that your classmates read it.
- Which comments you upvoted.
- Any book you added, and your first name with it only if you ticked the box asking for it to be shown.
Your classmates see a nickname, such as Ride 694. It comes from your code, it does not turn back into it, and it is what appears on the leaderboard and in the discussion.
If you are visiting with no code
Nothing identifies you. You can read every topic note, Levels 1 and 2 of every question with all the written hints, the shelf and the news. The site does record that somebody worked a level, with an empty code and a random number that is new on every page load and connects to nothing.
If you write to me through the form
The request form asks for your name, your email address, what you need, and which course or day. That goes to WordPress, which stores it and emails me a copy. It is the only place on this site where a real name and email are collected, and it does not touch the class system at all.
What is sent to the AI, and what is not
Three things go to Anthropic, the company whose model runs the tutor:
- What you type to the tutor, up to 400 characters, with the question and the coaching instructions. This is sent as you typed it. The stripping described above applies to what is written into the database, not to what is sent in the moment, so please do not type anything private into it.
- Every comment, in full, so that it can be screened before anybody sees it.
- Book and news descriptions, which contain nothing of yours.
Your code, your nickname and your name are not sent with any of it.
What stays on your own device
Your browser remembers your class code and which levels you have cleared. That never leaves the device, and on a shared laptop the next person will arrive signed in as you unless you sign out.
WordPress.com
This site runs on WordPress.com, so some things happen that are theirs and not mine. They serve the advertising, which I do not choose and cannot see. They keep their own visitor statistics. The Subscribe box in the footer signs you up with them, and they hold that email address, not me.
Who can see what
I can see everything in the class system. Your classmates can see your nickname, your comments and any book you added. Nobody outside the class sees your work at all, and nobody anywhere sees your name unless you asked for it to be shown on a book.
How long it is kept
There is no automatic deletion at the moment, so a record stays until I remove it. If you want your work taken out, ask me and I will take it out.
Asking about your own record
Write to me through the request page and tell me your code. I will tell you exactly what is stored against it, and remove it if that is what you want.
